NYU 1 Emory 1 (2OT)

The New York University women's soccer team tied Emory University 1-1 in a double-overtime University Athletic Association (UAA) contest on Friday afternoon, October 17, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.

The Violets (9-3-1, 2-0-1 UAA) are currently ranked #23 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and remain the lone unbeaten team in the Association.

NYU's opponent on Friday, Emory (7-3-2, 0-1-2 UAA), is currently ranked #9 by the NSCAA.

Melissa Menta played hero for the Violets, as the junior co-captain scored her fourth goal of the season in the 86th minute to knot the game 1-1 and force overtime. Her goal came after Emory scored to take the 1-0 lead in the 81st minute. On the Violets' goal, freshman Stephanie Ho collected the rebound in front of the Emory net and crossed the ball to the near-high corner of the box where Menta put it past the Eagles' keeper in the upper right corner.

"I think we feel really good about our performance," said NYU Head Coach Michele Canning. "We had a very specific gameplan for both offense and defense, and I think the girls worked hard to concentrate and execute it."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- The Violets were outshot 7-5 in shots on net, but Cassie Steinberg recorded a season-best six saves on the afternoon. The sophomore keeper improved to 9-3-1 on the season.

"I think there's a clear energy in the program right now," said Canning. "I we know we'll always stay in the game and that we will try to find a way to level the game and of course get the win."

- Menta led all players will all four of her shots landing on net.

- Junior Lexi Clarke had a great opportunity in the 103rd minute when the Emory goalie was caught on the far end of the net. Clarke's shot was blocked on the right side of the net by an Eagle defender.

The Violets will return to the pitch on Sunday afternoon, October 19, when they host fifth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University in another UAA match-up at Gaelic Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 pm, with live stats and live video available.
