Women's Soccer Falls 2-0 to Stevens

Violets Suffer First Loss of the Season

The New York University women's soccer team was defeated by Stevens Institute of Technology by a score of 2-0 on Sunday, September 8, in its second and final game of the Stevens Engineering Cup, in Hoboken, NJ.

It was the first loss of the season for NYU (2-1-1), while Stevens recorded its first win (1-3-0).

HIGHLIGHTS:

- NYU finished third of four teams in the final Cup Standings with seven points. Stevens and Vassar were named Co-Champions with nine points each.

- The Violets fell behind in the 29th minute when Allison Kopacz netted the first Stevens goal. The Ducks extended their lead to the final margin of 2-0 with Brigette Barden's goal in the 38th minute.

- NYU goalkeeper Arianna Strome entered at the half and kept the Ducks off the board the rest of the way, registering three saves in her 45 minutes of action.

- The Violets were outshot by a margin of 17-7, with only two of their seven shots on target.

- NYU's best scoring opportunities came in the latter stages of the game, including in the 84th minute when a Leslie Smith shot was blocked inside the box,  Ashley Cardounel recovered and launched a shot from the top of the box which was saved by Stevens' keeper Leah Spaulding.

- Another close scoring chance came in the 87th minute when an Erin Ahmed shot from close range went wide right. Moments later, at the 87:01 mark, Maddy Clappin hit a shot off the crossbar.

The Violets will return to the field on Saturday, September 14, as they travel to Poughkeepsie, NY, to face Vassar College. Kick-off is set for 1:00 PM.
