Women's Volleyball Sweeps on Day Two of Vassar Invitational

Violets Improve to 6-1 on the Season

The New York University women's volleyball team swept the second day of the Vassar College Invitational on Saturday, September 7, in Poughkeepsie, NY.
 
In the first match of the day, NYU (6-1) defeated Massachusetts Institute of Technology (5-3) by a score of 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-21). After decisively taking the first two sets, the Violets trailed 21-20 in the third set before winning the final five points of the match.
 
In the final match of the Invitational, NYU took on Vassar College (4-2). The Violets defeated the host school by a score of 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 26-24, 25-22).  The squad overcame multiple set points in the third set and a large deficit in the fourth. 
 
Alexandria Mao was named to the All-Tournament Team. The results of the invitational are as follows...
1st - Stevens Tech (4-0)
2nd - NYU (3-1)
3rd - Vassar (2-2)
4th - MIT (1-3)
5th - SUNY Cortland (0-4)
 
NYU vs. MIT Highlights:
 
- Mao recorded 12 kills and 12 digs.

- Katie Robinson doled out 31 assists.

- Allie Williams had six kills and a .333 hitting percentage.

- NYU nearly doubled the kill total of MIT (40-21).
 
NYU vs. Vassar Highlights:
 
- Mao recorded her first 20-kill match of the season.

- NYU trailed 19-15 in the final set before winning 10 of the final 13 points.

- The Violets totaled 12 service aces.

- Robinson's 39 assists led all players.
 
"Our blocking today was significant in minimizing MIT's and Vassar's offense," said NYU Head Coach Jolie Ward.  "Katie ran the offense and distributed the ball nicely, which allowed our entire team to remain controlled and disciplined. Our veteran leaders such as Mao and Allie stepped up when we needed them most."
 
The team returns to action on Tuesday, September 10, at Hunter College in New York, NY.  First serve is set for 6:00pm.
