Women's Volleyball Sweeps on Opening Day

Violets Defeat Montclair State and Spalding at Labor Day Invitational

The New York University women's volleyball team won both its matching at the season- opening Labor Day Invitational on Friday, August 30, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The Violets defeated Montclair State University 3-0 and Spalding University 3-1.

The Violets were never seriously threatened en route to the straight-set victory. over the Red Hawks (25-21, 25-21, 25-14), but were challenged a bit more by the Golden Hawks (25-21, 22-25, 25-12, 25-21).

- Nicole Frias led NYU with 11 kills. She added three digs.

- Perri Goldberg also had double-digit kills (10), while adding eight digs and one service ace.

- Emily Moore had a match-high 36 assists to go with three kills and one service ace,

- MaTia Hughes had a match-high 17 digs in her NYU debut. Cassidy Jourdan (15) and Alexandria Mao (11) also had double-digit digs.

"It was a solid beginning for our team," said Head Coach Jolie Ward. "The returning starters stepped up as expected and the newcomers were composed and contributed to a great first victory."

- Mao posted a double-double with match highs of 18 kills and 13 digs.

- Goldberg again record double-digit kills (11) and added eight digs.

- Moore added another 41 assists, while also contributing three digs and two service aces.

- Hughes again reached double digits in digs (11)

"It was a well-fought match. We used our serve-receive to spark our offense and used blocking to establish a great defensive tempo which is something we stress in practice," Ward explained. "I was particularly happy with the efforts of Nicole Frias and Alex Mao. who both stepped up when our team needed it most in the third and fourth sets."

NYU returns to the court on Saturday afternoon to face SUNY Geneseo at 12:00 pm.
