Wrestling Competes in Tri-Match at USMMA

Grapplers Face Stiff Competition in Kings Point, NY

Matt DiGiovanni went 2-0 on the afternoon.


RESULTS

The New York University wrestling team faced some stiff competition in a tri-match in Kings Point, NY, on Saturday afternoon, December 14.

#24 NYU began its day against #17 Roger Williams University, falling 26-9. The grapplers earned points at 125, 141, and 157 pounds, winning all three matches by decision.

The team then faced the host United States Merchant Marine Academy, with the Mariners taking the tightly contested dual 21-16.

NYU trailed USMMA 12-0 after dropping the first three matches, but won the next three and four of the next five to take a 16-15 lead. However, the squad was unable to hold on to the slim lead in the final two matches.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Wayne Yuan went 1-1 on the afternoon at 125 pounds. The freshman won his match against Roger Williams by a 4-2 decision.

- Fellow freshman Nick Matthews went 1-1 at 141 pounds, also earning a 4-2 decision against Roger Williams.

- Richy Cruz went 1-1 at 149 pounds. The sophomore earned a close 2-1 decision against USMMA.

- Junior co-captain Matt DiGiovanni was a perfect 2-0 at 157 pounds, earning a 5-1 decision versus Roger Williams and a win by fall against the Mariners.

- Freshman John Messinger (165 pounds) went 1-1 on the day, earning a 7-3 decision against USMMA.

- Junior co-captain Patrick Sheehan went 1-1, as well. Sheehan, ranked #10 at 184 pounds, dropped a close 9-8 decision to #6 David Welch of the Hawks, but followed it up with a 10-2 major decision against the Mariners.

- Sophomore Matt Eulau went 2-0 in two 157-pound exhibition matches.

- Senior 174-pounder Chris Amro went 2-0 in exhibition matches, as well.

NYU will take some time off for the holiday break before getting back on the mat after the New Year on Saturday, January 4. The grapplers will compete in the Franklin & Marshall College Open in Lancaster, PA.
