The New York University women's volleyball team lost its first match but came back to win the second at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship in Waltham, MA, on Friday, November 8.

In their opening match, the Violets (26-7) won the first set but could not maintain the momentum and fell to Carnegie Mellon University (24-9) 3-1.

The #4-seeded Violets won the first set 25-19, but dropped the second 25-20. Then, despite falling behind 5-0 in the third, NYU rallied and wound up with two set points, but could not put away the #5-seeded Tartans before falling 31-29.

In the final set, Carnegie Mellon led from start to finish, though the Violets did cut a 12-point deficit (16-4) to only four (20-16). However, the Tartans scored the next four points and went on to a match-clinching 25-18 win.

"We underperformed in that match," said NYU Head Coach Jolie Ward. "We came in as the fourth seed and expected to finish among the top four, so naturally we were disappointed."

In their second match, against #8-seeded University of Rochester, the Violets struggled throughout. However, NYU was able to hold off the upset-minder Yellowjackets (8-27) by a 3-2 score (25-23, 21-25, 25-16, 17-25, 15-13) after overcoming an 8-2 deficit in the final set.

"I wanted to see how some of our future players would handle the pressure of that fifth set," Ward explained. "We weren't playing well and it was good to see some of our future options experience some success in this situation."

- Alexandria Mao had a match-high 17 kills for the Violets

- Emily Moore led the way with a match-high 41 assists. She added seven kills, 12 digs and a .500 hitting percentage
