Women's Soccer Tops William Paterson 3-2 in OT Thriller

Violets Score in OT, Move to 5-3-1 on Season

Ahmed scored the game-winner in OT on Wednesday.

The New York University women's soccer team emerged victorious, 3-2, in overtime against William Paterson University on Wednesday, October 2, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY. The Violets outshot the Pioneers 26-9 and had scores from three different players.

NYU took the 1-0 lead early in the first half. The game would stay that way until the Violets jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the second. William Paterson came back and scored the next two to force overtime, where NYU sealed the victory with its third goal of the game with just over five minutes remaining in thr first overtime period.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Senior tri-captain Leslie Smith scored her first goal of the season, adding an assist to lead NYU with three points.

- Senior Erin Ahmed scored the overtime winner for the Violets and is now tied for the team lead with four scores.

- Junior Amelia Hammerl kicked off the scoring for the game, netting her then-team-leading fourth goal of the season.

- William Paterson freshman Tori Woetzel scored both goals for the Pioneers. They were the first of her collegiate career.

"It was a hard-fought victory," said Assistant Coach Jen Leaverton. "I'm proud that the team was able to regain its composure after allowing two goals late and pull out the win in overtime."

The Violets will be back on the field on Saturday, October 5, when they kick off University Athletic Association (UAA) competition against the University of Rochester. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM in Rochester, NY.
