The New York University wrestling team opened the New Year by defeating all three of its opponents on Saturday, January 5, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

NYU, now 7-1 in dual meets this season, posted victories over the University of Southern Maine (33-12), the University of Scranton (40-4) and Hunter College (23-13).

"I'm proud of the way our guys wrestled today," said Senior Assistant Coach Corey Luce. "They kept attacking and attacking, and our offense was consistent throughout the meet."

Highlights

 - Freshman Richy Cruz made his NYU debut, winning all three of his bouts. He recorded a tech fall vs. Southern Maine and a major decision against Scranton.

"Cruz has really settled in at 141 pounds," Luce said. "Despite only having a week of practice under his belt, he really stayed on the offensive throughout his three matches."

- Seniors David Rice and Jake Pawlowski each recorded two victories without a loss. Pawlowski (184) produced a fall in 4:01 against Scranton's Stephen Kaiser, while Rice (165) posted a 16-3 major decision against Hunter's Jesse Bader.

- Also recording two victories on the day for NYU were Janik Santana-Quintana (125), Corbin Lee (133), Matt DiGiovanni (149), Chris Amro (174), and Sam Galassi (197). Both of Amro's victories came by fall, while Lee and DiGiovanni each had one.

- NYU never trailed in the victories over Southern Maine and Scranton. The team did fall behind Hunter 4-0 before winning the next five bouts en route to its third win of the day.

"Overall, we're definitely moving in the right direction, and will be right where we need to be come February," Luce stated.

The squad returns to action this Tuesday, Jan. 8, for a 3:00pm match against The College of Mount St. Vincent in Riverdale, NY.
