Box Score
The New York University women's soccer team nearly rallied from a 2-0 deficit in its season opener, but ultimately fell 3-2 to 18th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology on Friday, August 31, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
Melissa Menta scored both of the Violets' (0-1) goals in her collegiate debut, twice pulling the team to within a goal of the Ducks (1-0). Stevens held on, however, avenging a 1-0 loss to NYU last season.
Highlights
- Carly Bean gave Stevens an early lead in the 14th minute, blasting in a cross from Ann Heine.
- Jessie Wos made it 2-0 13 minutes later, burying a free kick into the corner from 20 yards out.
- Menta cut the deficit to 2-1 just minutes before halftime.
Cami Crawford played a long through ball to Menta on a counter, and the freshman slipped a shot past the charging goalkeeper for her first career goal.
- Heine put the Ducks back up two early in the second half, putting in a ball that was played into the box by Wos.
- Menta's second goal came in the 67th minute on a bang-bang play.
Leslie Smith fed
Serra Tumay in the middle of the field, and Tumay touched it to Menta all alone in the box. The freshman's initial shot was saved, but she beat out a defender for the loose ball and knocked it in.
- The Violets nearly netted the equalizer with just three minutes left, but Kyle Stephens made a tremendous defensive play to save the game for Stevens. Tumay played a long free kick into the box, which found its way to a wide-open
Claire Shanahan. She slid it past the keeper, but Stephens ran in and cleared it off the line at the last second.
NYU returns to action on Thursday, September 6, when it hosts Purchase College at Gaelic Park. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
