The New York University wrestling team kicked off its season with a 3-1 performance at the John Reese Duals, hosted by Wilkes University in Wilkes Barre, PA, on Saturday, November 10. NYU defeated SUNY Oneonta 23-9 , Wilkes 18-16 and King's College 26-13, while falling to York College 37-3.
NYU was able to knock off the country's 13th-ranked team, Wilkes, despite missing a whole week of practice due to Hurricane Sandy.
"I'm proud of the way our guys wrestled and stayed focused in the aftermath of the hurricane,” stated Senior Assistant Coach
Corey Luce.
Highlights:
-
David Rice led the way for the grapplers, going undefeated (3-0) in the 165-pound weight class, including a major decision victory in his dual against King's.
- In his first collegiate completion,
Corbin Lee (133) helped power NYU's upset over Wilkes by routing Myzar Mendoza, the country's seventh-ranked wrestler. Lee also came up just short in a tightly contested bout against Oneonta's Ben Mikac, ranked ninth in the country. Lee culminated his debut with a pin against his opponent from King's.
- Also making his collegiate debut,
Andre Delagnes (125) finished the day unblemished. He went 3-0 while recording a technical fall and a major decision.
-
Jake Pawlowski picked up right where he left off last year, posting a 3-0 record in the 184-pound weight class.
- In the team's loss to York, NYU trotted out a younger lineup to get some of its grapplers some valuable early-season experience.
“We are very pleased with today's result, especially beating such a talented team in Wilkes,” said Luce. “Our younger guys wrestled tough, and we had some great performances in every weight class."
NYU returns to the mats next weekend, November 17-18, at the New York State Collegiate Championships in Ithaca, NY.
