The New York University women's swimming & diving team opens the 2012-13 season on Saturday, October 20, when it hosts SUNY Cortland at the Palladium Athletic Facility.
The season marks a new era for the Violets, as
Trevor Miele takes over as Head Coach. He has a long history with NYU, having swam for the team from 1995-99, during which time he was a four-time NCAA qualifier and two-time All-American. After graduating, Miele spent four seasons as an assistant coach for the men's team before serving as the Head Coach of men's and women's swimming & diving at the Stevens Institute of Technology for seven years.
Miele will fill the shoes of NYU's beloved Head Coach Lauren Beam, who passed away after a long battle with cancer just a month before the beginning of last season. Former Violet
Kacey McCaffrey filled in admirably as Acting Head Coach as the team dedicated its season to Beam. The squad recorded a 5-3 dual-meet record, a fourth-place showing at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship and a 49th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championships.
With an All-American distance swimmer and an All-American diver lost to graduation, as well as just two seniors on the roster, this year's squad is a young one. Among the top returners for the Violets are
Savanna Keator,
Gabby Borutecene,
Nina Rusiewski, and
Emily Doerner, all of whom got stronger as the 2011-12 season wore on.
“The team has been working hard and adapting well to our new training program,” said Miele. “Overall, they've been swimming well.”
The Violets' season-opening dual meet against Cortland will begin with diving events. They will be followed by the swimming events at 1:00 pm.
