The New York University wrestling team went 1-2 at the Metro New England Duals, which were held Saturday, January 28, in Bristol, RI.
NYU fell to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy 23-22 in a tiebreak, defeated Williams College 31-18 and fell short against host Roger Williams University 42-9.
Led by captain
Jamie Myers, making his return to the mats after a year and half struggling with injuries, the grapplers had a strong performance despite being short-handed at the 125-pound and 141-pound divisions. Myers went 3-0 on the day, including one pin.
“Jamie's return really brought some energy to the team on a day when we needed it,” explained assistant coach
Corey Luce. “He's going to keep improving as he wrestles more, but getting him back is a huge boost going forward.”
Myers battled a variety of injuries the past year and a half, but returns just in time to join an already improving group of grapplers.
In the first dual, NYU faced off against the Coast Guard Academy. Wins by
David Rice (a pin at 165),
Gregg Martino (174), Pat Sheehan (184), and Myers (197) saw the match come down to an overtime tiebreaker since the score was knotted at 22-22. However, since the teams' total of pins and technical falls were even, Coast Guard gained the decisive point by winning 36-33 in bouts that went to decision.
NYU's lone victory of the day came against Williams College. Rice and
Jake Pawlowski (184) each recorded pins as the grapplers won six of 10 matches en route to the 31-18 win.
Dan Gorman (149) and Sheehan (174) both won their respective matches as NYU continued a day of tough wrestling.
In the third match of the day, NYU was not able to overcome Roger Williams. However, the dual did feature a couple of bright spots as both Martino and Myers picked up wins.
“We are starting to shape up very nicely,” said Luce. “We are entering a very important week of duals and we need to be at our best.”
NYU comes back next to face four Centennial Conference opponents (Washington and Lee University, McDaniel College, Muhlenberg College, and Ursinus College) in a crucial day of wrestling in Lexington, VA, on Saturday, February 4.
