The New York University women's volleyball team dropped its opening matches of the NYU Violet Classic on Friday, September 23, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

In an exciting and tightly-contested first match, Hunter College (8-4) defeated the Violets in four sets.

After the Hawks won the first set 26-24, NYU (10-6) rallied for a 25-17 victory in the second.

The Hawks captured the third set 25-23, then overcame an 18-8 deficit in the final set to post a 26-24 match-clinching victory.

Sarah Buckingham led the Violets with 12 kills, while Kolby Warren added 11.

Hope Bogle registered a career-best 48 set assists for NYU. Kaylee Schanda had a team-high 20 digs, Alex Mao had 16 and Jenn Korte contributed 10.

Christine Luebcke led Hunter with a match-high 16 kills. Alisa Jaganjac posted 23 digs and Katina Boutis had 33 assists.

The loss for NYU snapped an 19-match home winning streak dating back to November 13, 2009.

In their second match, the Violets lost to Eastern University (13-1), currently ranked #5 in the latest AVCA Division III Coaches Poll, in three sets: 25-15, 25-9, 25-14.

Buckingham again led the Violets with 10 digs. Bogle contributed 21 assists and eight digs. Schanda also had eight digs.

Courtney Reinhold had 17 kills for Eastern.

NYU returns to the court on Saturday at 12:00pm to face Gettysburg College.
