Women's Volleyball Wins Two on Opening Day

Violets Sweep Rutgers-Newark and SUNY Geneso in Ward's Debut

The New York University women's volleyball team won its first two matches of the 2011 season at the NYU Labor Day Invitational on Friday, September 2, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The Violets (2-0), ranked #21 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Preseason Poll, swept Rutgers-Newark (0-2) 25-16, 25-17, 25-8 and SUNY Geneso (1-1) 25-16, 25-19, 25-91, in Jolie Ward's NYU head coaching debut.

"I thought we did an outstanding job, overall," Ward said. "We have a very young team with a lot of energy and a lot of enthusiasm to win games."

Leading the offense in the opener vs. Rutgers-Newark were Kolby Warren and Sarah Buckingham. Warren had six kills with a team-leading.500 hitting percentage, while Buckingham contributed eight kills.

Hope Bogle dished out 17 assists, while contributing 11 digs on defense.

Jenn Korte was a force at the net, putting down five blocks. 
 
Kaylee Schanda steadied the defense, picking up 12 digs. 

For Rutgers-Newark, Rachel Witt had a team-high eight kills, while Jen Mendoza led the team with eight digs.

In the Violets' second match, Buckingham registered 18 kills, while Alex Mao added 13.

Bogle again led the team with 37 assists, while Mao and Schanda each had 14 digs.

"No matter who's on the court, everyone is serving a purpose," Ward added. "We may have line-up changes throughout the season, but the goals and expectations will be the same."

The Violets return to action on Saturday when they take on Albion College at 11:00am.
