The New York University men's wrestling team fell to Stevens Institute of Technology 22-15 on Friday, November 9, in Hoboken, NJ.
 
Janik Santana-Quintana got NYU off to an early lead with his 8-2 victory in the 125-pound match. Quintana was in control for the majority of the match as he picked up three points for the grapplers.
 
However, Stevens ripped off 18 straight points to take a commanding lead. NYU was forced to forfeit the 141-pound match because no 141 wrestlers are healthy at the moment. That loss turned out to be the difference in the dual.
 
NYU came storming back with victories by David Rice (165), Gregg Martino (174), Pat Sheehan (184), and Steve Massey (197).
 
Rice took down Joey Favia, who's ranked #5 in the nation by d3wrestle.com. Rice controlled most of the match as he took down Favia three times en route to an 8-7 win. He remained undefeated on the season, improving his perfect record to 13-0.
 
Martino, who was pitted against #9 nationally ranked Ryan Dormann, as well as Sheehan and Massey, kept NYU's hope of a comeback alive as they each won by regular decision.
 
Trailing 18-15 going into the final bout, Rudy De La Cruz needed a victory in the heavyweight match to at least tie up the dual. However, NYU fell just short as De La Cruz lost by major decision, giving Stevens a 22-15 victory.
 
“We wrestled very well tonight,” said assistant coach Corey Luce. “It's always tough to win a dual when you have to forfeit a weight class, so I was proud our guys still gave us a chance going into the heavyweight match.”
 
The grapplers will take a break for the holidays, but return to the mats on Dec. 29 for the Citrus Invitational.
