Women's Volleyball Wins ECAC Opener

Violets Defeat Mt. St. Mary and face FDU-Florham in Semifinals

The New York University women's volleyball team defeated Mt. St. Mary College in three sets in the quarterfinal round of the ECAC Metro/Upstate Championship at NYU's Coles Sports Center on Wednesday, November 9.

The Violets, seeded #2 in the eight-team tournament, move on to the semifinals on Saturday at 2:00 pm at Elmira College in Elmira, NY. They will face #3 seed FDU-Florham, which held off #6 seed St. John Fisher in five sets.

Host Elmira, the #1 seed, plays #4 Ramapo College in the first semifinal at 11:00 am.

The two winners will play in the Championship Match at 5:00 pm. All three matches will be available via video webcast at www.empire8.tv.
 
NYU (21-16) made easy work of the #7 seeded Knights (20-11), winning the three-set match (25-14, 25-9, 25-13) in 49 minutes.

Alex Mao had a match-high 12 kills for the Violets. Hope Bogle led the way with 29 set assists, while Kaylee Schanda was best with 20 digs.

"This is a new season for us," said NYU head coach Jolie Ward. "We're 1-0 right now and hope to end the season 3-0."

For the match, NYU hit .247, while Mt. St. Mary finished at -.095.

Mary Ann Raftery led the Knights with four kills. Lauren Halverson had 13 assists and Heather Schaeffer added 13 digs.

"We're working on a new offense right now that will keep us fresh and give us a spark," Ward explained. "We'll continue to work on it in practice and see what happens this weekend."
