Wrestling Team goes 1-2 at the John Reese Duals

The Grapplers Defeated Oneonta 19-15, Fell to Wilkes 38-9, and Lost in a Tie-Break to King's 22-21.

David Rice won all three of his matches on the day.
The New York University wrestling team won one match and lost two at the John Reese Duals, which were held on Saturday, November 12, at Wilkes-Barre, PA.

In the first match, NYU defeated Oneonta State 19-5. Janik Santana-Quintana (125) led the way for NYU after he pinned Nick Oliveto of Oneonta in 6:30. Quintana's six points coupled with David Rice's major decision in the 165-pound bout gave the grapplers a lead they would not surrender en route to the four-point victory.

In the second dual match, NYU fell to Wilkes University 38-9. While it was a disappointing result for the grapplers, both David Rice (165) and Gregg Martino (174) won their respective bouts.

In their final match, NYU faced King's College. The back-and-forth bout featured NYU taking an early lead. But, King's came back with two pins to force a tie at 21-21. Because the match cannot end on a tie, the bout went to the tie-break total number of victories. Both NYU and King's had five bout  victories, so the second tie-break of combined total of falls and technical falls was used. It was on the second tie-break that NYU fell just short and King's was awarded the victory.

Rice (165) capped off a spectacular day for NYU with his pin over Zachary Grey of King's. The victory marked Rice's sixth straight to open the season.

"The third match was a very tough way to end the day and just a very tough loss in general," said head coach Bruce Haberli. "We did have some big individual performance by David Rice and Gregg Martino, as well as Piotr Puchalski, who won his first collegiate match. We have to find a way to rebound next week."

The grapplers will be back in action next Sunday, Nov. 20, at The College of New Jersey Open in Ewing, NJ.
