The New York University women's volleyball team completed a perfect first day of the NYU Violet Classic by sweeping the City College of New York and Bates College on Friday, September 24, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
In the Violets' (16-2) opening match of the tournament, the team notched a 3-0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-20) win over the Beavers (7-7).
Leading the offense for NYU was Alex Mao, who recorded eight kills while hitting .400 along with two blocks.
Also putting together a strong offensive performance was Alexa Carrasco who tallied seven kills and hit .500.
On defense, Alexis Schwartz notched 10 digs for the Violets while Rachel Saywer added nine along with a team-high four service aces.
For the Beavers, Zuleyka Polanco led the team on offense and defense with eight kills and 13 digs.
In the second match of the day, in front of a Coles volleyball record crowd of 791 fans, NYU extended its winning streak to 10 matches with a sweep of Bates (3-6) (25-12, 25-18, 25-14). The Violets held the Bobcats to just 14 kills and a -.067 hitting percentage for the match.
On offense, Kendyl Dunn led all players with nine kills and a .368 hitting percentage. She also notched four blocks, including two solos.
Beth Fionda also put together a strong performance at the net for NYU, tallying eight kills while hitting .444.
On defense, Erin McLaughlin led all players with 17 digs while also notching three service aces and five kills.
Sawyer was also in double-digits on defense, putting up 12 digs while adding three service aces to bring her season total to 50.
Schwartz and Natalie Fernandez also notched double-digit digs. Schwartz put up 11 while Fernandez added 12.
For the Bobcats, Nicole Russell recorded five kills while Caroline Gattuso added 15 digs.
NYU returns to action tomorrow for the second day of the Violet Classic, taking on the other undefeated team in the tournament, Elmhurst College. That match is scheduled to begin at noon.
The Violets wrap-up the weekend with a match against Hunter College at 2:00 pm.
