The New York University women's volleyball split its matches on the first day of the Nazareth College Volleyball Invitational, falling to SUNY Fredonia after sweeping The Sage Colleges, Friday, September 10, in Rochester, NY.
In their first match of the day, the Violets (6-1), currently ranked #19 in the AVCA Division III Coaches Poll, needed only 50 minutes to defeat the Gators (0-5) in straight sets (25-8, 25-3, 25-12).
Leading the offense for NYU was Natalie Fernandez, who tallied a match-high five kills while hitting .400. The sophomore also led the team on defense with five digs while also adding four service aces.
Also notching five kills on offense was Kolby Warren who hit .833 for the match.
Sally Downs was a force at the net in the match, putting back three blocks including a solo while also adding four kills and two service aces.
For the Gators, Nicole Corbett and Cheryce Harvey both notched three kills while Kelsey Wilson added seven digs.
In the following match, the Violets took the first set off of the Blue Devils (5-2) in resounding fashion before dropping the next three to fall 3-1 (15-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-19).
Leading the way on offense for NYU was Beth Fionda, who put down a team-high 12 kills along with two blocks.
Also in double-digits on offense was Kendyl Dunn, who notched 10 kills and added four blocks including two solos.
On defense, Alexis Schwartz tallied a match-high 18 digs.
For the Blue Devils, Chelsea Senn recorded 12 kills while Sarah Zureck added 16 digs.
The Violets return to action tomorrow morning when they take on second-ranked Juniata College. First serve is set for 10:00 am.
