The New York University wrestling team was in Chicago on Saturday to compete in the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships. The squad took second place while five of its grapplers earned All-Association honors.
Steve Contino (133 pounds), Matt Magill (157), Sean Connors (165), Steve Massey (174), and Sabino Galassi (184) all went 2-0 to win their respective weight classes. NYU's five champions were the most at the competition.
In addition, Galassi was named UAA Freshman of the Year while head coach Bruce Haberli's and his assistants were honored as UAA Coaching Staff of the Year.
NYU defeated Case Western Reserve University, 36-10, in its first match but fell short against eventual UAA team champion, the University of Chicago, 22-14.
“Our ultimate goal was to win the UAA Championship, but we were happy to win in five weight classes,” said NYU assistant coach Corey Luce. “Our guys at those weights were expected to come in and win, and they did. They all had very good weekends. But, we also had guys like Adlee Fayyaz and Clement Bommier step up and do a really nice job for us as well, and they deserve recognition for that.”
NYU was without captains Kyle Christensen and Gregg Martino, who have been battling injuries. The team hopes to have them both back in time for the Metropolitan Championships, which take place on Feb. 21.
“All of the matches up until the (Metropolitan Championships) are just a stepping stone,” said Luce. “We want to be primed and ready to go at that point. We expect to have our top lineup ready for that competition.”
Before the Metropolitan Championships, NYU will host a four-team meet on Saturday, Feb. 13 against the University of Scranton, Morrisville State College, and McDaniel College.
