The New York University women's volleyball team swept both of its matches to open the 2010 New York Upstate Regional Challenge hosted by Nazareth College, Saturday, October 30, in Rochester, NY.
The Violets (30-4), currently ranked #15 in the AVCA Division III Coaches Top 25 Poll, have surpassed last year's win total of 29 while also becoming the first team in the UAA in 2010, as well as the first NYU team since 2006, to reach the 30-win plateau.
The Violets easily dispatched host Nazareth (16-18) 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-13) in their first match of the day.
Leading the Violets offense that collectively hit .333 for the match was Kendyl Dunn, who notched 10 kills while hitting .375 with one block.
Erin McLaughlin was one kill shy of a double-double, recording nine along with 11 digs while also hitting .389.
Also putting strong offensive performances together were Beth Fionda and Sally Downs, who both hit over .400 for the match. Fionda notched eight kills and hit a team-best .438, while Downs added seven kills while also putting back a match-high five blocks.
On defense, Alexis Schwartz and Rachel Sawyer both had double-digits kills. Schwartz led the way with 11, while Sawyer added 10 along with a service ace.
For the Golden Flyers, Kristi Custer recorded a match-high 11 kills. Megan Rogers and Carra Vanderstyne both added seven digs.
In NYU's second match of the day, the team defeated SUNY Brockport (9-24) in straight sets (25-18, 25-20, 25-14).
Downs led a Violets attack that hit .337. Ahe tallied a match-high 12 kills and hit a career-best .800, while also adding two service aces and four blocks including two solos.
Also in double-digits on offense was McLaughlin, who put down 11 kills while hitting .474 with three blocks and four digs.
On defense, Sawyer led all players with 12 digs.
For the Golden Eagles, Kristi Schrantz recorded eight kills. Kelly Nowak and Mary Cocking both added eight digs.
The Violets return to action tomorrow for the second and final day of the Upstate Regional Challenge. NYU takes on St. Lawrence University at 1:00 pm and concludes the weekend against the Rochester Institute of Technology at 3:00 pm.
