NYU Has Mixed Results at Metro/New England Duals

Myers, Magill Test Themselves Against Nation's Best

Myers posted an impressive victory on Saturday.

The New York University wrestling team returned to the mat on Saturday to compete in the Metro/New England Duals at Williams College in Williamstown, MA.

Three schools representing the Metro Conference (NYU, Hunter College, The College of New Jersey) squared off against three schools representing the New England Conference (Williams, Roger Williams University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute) in dual-meet competition. NYU went 1-2 in its three matches to run its record to 9-9 on the season.

In its first match of the day, NYU took on host Williams College and was defeated, 29-12. Highlighting NYU's effort was 141-pounder Clement Bommier, who pinned Chris Simmons at 1:43. Sean Connors and Sabino Galassi also notched wins for NYU, at 165 pounds and 184 pounds, respectively. At 157 pounds, junior captain Matt Magill battled nationally-ranked Carl Breitenstein before falling, 3-0.

“Williams College is one of the best teams in the nation. We knew they were a very tough team,” said NYU assistant coach Brian Benson. “Magill had a very close loss to Breitenstein, but it was a good measuring stick for him. He's been wrestling guys ranked in the top-10 very tough, but coming up a little short. Hopefully, he can turn the corner soon.”

NYU had better luck in its second match, topping Worcester Polytechnic Institute 38-9. Once again, Bommier and Connors each earned wins. Michael Cunningham was also impressive, earning a victory via fall in just 1:09 at 197 pounds.

In the final match of the event, NYU fell short against Roger Williams 27-6. However, 197-pounder Jamie Myers earned one of his biggest wins of the year, defeating nationally-ranked Nick Cambi 1-0.

“Myers has really been coming on strong,” said Benson. “His win was big for him and the bright spot of the day for us."

The grapplers will be back in action on Feb. 6 when they take part in the University Athletic Association Championships in Chicago, IL. Later that same day, they will also take on Elmhurst College in a dual meet.
