The NYU wrestling team was in Elizabethtown, PA, on Saturday to take part in a four-team meet against Gettysburg College, Millersville University and host Elizabethtown College. NYU went 1-2 on the day and ran its overall record to 8-7.
Though the team only came away with one win, the NYU coaching staff was pleased to see how well the wrestlers stacked up against tough competition.
"Generally, this was as good as we have looked all season," said NYU assistant coach Brian Benson. "We dropped a lot of close matches. But, overall we were sharp and aggressive. We knew coming in that these teams would be tough, but our guys were game and it was a good experience for them."
In its opening match, NYU defeated Gettysburg, 32-12. Matt Magill and Jamie Myers led the way, pinning their opponents at 157 and 197 pounds, respectively. Sean Connors was also impressive vs. Gettysburg, notching a win by technical fall at 165 pounds.
NYU next took on Millersville and came up just short, falling 25-18. Adlee Fayyaz (125 pounds) and Steve Contino (133 pounds) each won their matches by pin.
NYU concluded the day against Elizabethtown and was defeated, 32-6. Contino and Steve Massey provided the wins for NYU.
After struggling with an illness that sidelined him since December, Contino stood out with two strong wins on the day.
"Steve looked really tough today," said Benson. "He pulled out a great win in overtime in his last match against very tough competition. He's been battling, so that was a big win for him. This was as good as he's felt in a while."
Next weekend, the NYU grapplers will compete at the New York State Championships, hosted by Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Last year, NYU placed 10th out of 18 squads at the State Championships, with Magill taking sixth in the 157-pound weight class.
"(The State Championships) is one of the best tournaments we go to all year," said Benson. "There are a lot of top quality Division III teams there, like Ithaca, Brockport, and Cortland. We want to be able to finish as high as we can, and we think guys like Magill and (Gregg) Martino have a good chance to place pretty high."
