Rebecca Assing and Filiz Kipcakli tickled the twine early in the second half as the New York University women's soccer team held off Montclair State University, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the Swarthmore College Swat Kick Classic in Swarthmore, PA.
NYU (2-1) continued its streak of strong second halves, scoring twice right after halftime. Assing netted her first score of 2009 just 46 seconds after intermission after redirecting an Erica Jones free kick. At 58:05, Kipcakl converted a Lucy Dolly Caires corner kick for her second goal this season and a 2-0 NYU lead.
All four of the Violets' tallies this season have occurred in the second half.
"It's great to get restart goals this early in the season," NYU head coach Werner T. Dasbach said. "When you're attacking, you get restarts."
Montclair State (1-1) pulled within 2-1 at 84:28 when Natalia Sisti took a feed from Stephanie Barbulescu and converted a breakaway.
Rachael Ross, who was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Caires and Kipcakli, made three saves for the Violets, who outshot the Red Hawks, 17-11, and owned a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.
Leah Tepperman made four saves in the loss for Montclair State.
NYU returns to the pitch Saturday, Sept. 12, when it opposes Ursinus College in the first game of the Sixth Annual Stevens Institute of Technology Engineering Cup. Start time is 2:30 p.m. The Violets won their first Engineering Cup last season after defeating Middlebury College and Stevens Tech.
