Filiz Kipcakli scored the game-winning goal and assisted on an insurance tally in the final 9:23 of regulation, lifting the New York University women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Albright College in its first game at the Swarthmore College Swat Classic on Friday night in Swarthmore, PA.
Rachael Ross recorded her first collegiate victory and shutout without making a save for the Violets (1-1), who owned a 31-1 edge in shots and an 8-0 advantage on corner kicks.
NYU played 11-on-10 after Laura Palumbo was tackled by Albright's (1-1) starting goalkeeper 6:38 into the game. Despite owning a 14-1 edge on shots going into halftime, the Violets could not break into the scoring column.
Kipcakli finally broke through for NYU, hammering home a Lucy Dolly Caires corner kick at the 80:37 mark. Just 2:28 later, Kipcakli threaded a through ball to Emily Jenkinson, who tucked a shot past Albright goalkeeper Heather Fitzgerald (9 saves) to cap the scoring.
"Great goal, great movement," NYU head coach Werner T. Dasbach said. "The spirit and the energy going forward was very exciting."
NYU is off until Sunday when it takes on local rival Montclair State University, a 1-0 winner over Baptist Bible College, at 10 a.m.
