In its final match before University Athletic Association competition this weekend, the New York University women's volleyball team swept Vassar College on Wednesday night, Sept. 30, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The Violets (15-3) took the first two sets against the Brewers (10-4) before struggling in the third. Vassar held two game-point serves against NYU in the third set before a service ace from freshman Natalie Fernandez and a block by freshman Kendyl Dunn and sophomore Jillian Tremmel sealed the 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 28-26) victory.

“I felt that we played a bit down tonight,” said head coach Ed Caesar after the match.  “But it is always good to get a win when you don't play your best.”

Recording her 14th double-digit kill performance of the season, Dunn tallied a match-high 13 while hitting .500 with two blocks.

Sophomore and fellow middle blocker Kolby Warren also put together a strong performance at the net, notching eight kills and hitting .333 with two blocks.

On defense, junior Rachel Sawyer moved past 1,100 digs for her career, putting up a match-high 13 along with a season-best four service aces.

Also tallying double-digit digs was Fernandez, who put up 12 while adding six kills and an ace.

For the Brewers, sophomore Amy Bavosa notched 11 kills while junior Chelsea Mottern put up 12 digs.

“We have a young team,” concluded Caesar.  “So sometimes you have to just have to live with the ups and downs, and tonight we faced both and still came out on top.”

The Violets return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 3, when they travel to Rochester, NY, to take part in the UAA Round Robin #1. NYU will face 2008 NCAA Division III National Champion Emory University on Saturday and Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Chicago on Sunday.
