Things started off slowly for the New York University wrestling team on Saturday, but ended on a positive note at the John Reese Duals, which were held at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

NYU went 2-2 in four matches Saturday, dropping its first two matches against Wilkes and King's College. But, the squad completed the day with wins in head-to-head competition against York (PA) College and Mount St. Joseph College.

Junior co-captain Gregg Martino had an impressive day by polishing off three of his four opponents to go 3-1 for the event. Senior Kyle Christensen and senior co-captain Matt Magill also had solid days, as both wrestlers also went 3-1l.

“Across the board, those three guys performed very well,” said assistant coach Corey Luce. “Martino was able to sweep all three matches against York, Wilkes and King's. Those three matches are important to put himself in contention for the Metropolitan Championships later in the year.”

Against York in the third match of the day, NYU posted a resounding 30-8 victory.  The NYU grapplers took seven of the 10 decisions against York, with sophomore Steve Massey (174 pounds) pinning York's Paul Richards, while freshman Justin Murberg (285) did likewise against Shane Cooley.

In the final bout of the day, NYU took down Mount St. Joseph 30-15. NYU benefited from Mount St. Joseph not being able to field a competitor in two of the weight divisions, as both teams went neck-and-neck in bouts where they faced off. Christensen (125) picked up his third win of the afternoon by pinning Cody Steward, while Magill (165) notched his third victory by defeating Timothy Pope 3-0.

In NYU's first dual match of the day vs. Wilkes, the host school picked up a 31-6 victory. A pair of veterans picked up NYU's only victories in the contest.  Junior Steve Contino (133) defeated A.J. Fisher 6-1, while Martino (141 pounds) beat Anthony Dattolo by a 7-3 margin.

In the second dual match on Saturday, NYU came up just short and lost to King's 19-12.  Martino picked up his second decision of the day by defeating Tony Miele 2-0.  Christensen, freshman Gabriel Gleason (149) and Magill also picked up wins over their opponents.

“Magill looked flat in that first match,” Luce said. “But, as the day went on he started picking it up. He's up a weight class right now, so he's getting used to it.”

NYU will be back in action on Thursday, Nov. 19, when the team travels to take on The College of New Jersey in Ewing, NJ.

“We're still in the beginning of the season,” Luce added. “I still see a lot of potential in our guys. We'll get right back to work early on Monday and make any adjustments we need to make.”
