The New York University women's volleyball team snapped a five-match losing streak to Carnegie Mellon University by sweeping them in the first match of University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #1 on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY.
After falling being 7-3 early in the first set, the Violets (16-3) rallied against the Tartans (9-7) to win the set 25-22. That comeback gave NYU all the confidence it would need as the team cruised in the next two sets on its way to the 3-0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-16) win.
Leading the way on offense was freshman Natalie Fernandez, who put together the fourth double-double of her career with 11 kills and 14 digs.
Sophomore captain Elizabeth Dick also put together a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.
Also in double figures on offense was freshman Kendyl Dunn who tallied 10 kills while hitting .471.
Sophomore setter Mina Baban put together a strong all-around performance with 38 assists, nine digs and a career-best seven service aces.
On defense, freshman Alexis Schwartz and junior Rachel Sawyer both totaled 10 digs.
For the Tartans, junior Caroline Size recorded seven kills while fellow junior Cameron Griffin put up 10 digs.
The Violets return to action tomorrow when they take on 2008 Division III NCAA National Champion Emory University at 9:00 am and the University of Chicago at 12:00 pm. Live stats will be available for both matches.
