New York University fell behind in the first 20 minutes and never rebounded in Saturday's 5-0 loss to the University of Rochester in the University Athletic Association (UAA) opener for both sides at Edwin Fauver Stadium in Rochester, NY.
Ranked #24 in the D3Soccer.com Top 25, Rochester (7-1-2, 1-0-0 UAA) got two goals from Brittany Huber and three assists from Jessica Smith to thwart the Violets (7-3-0, 0-1-0 UAA). Ellen Coleman started the scoring by depositing a rebound of Kristen Ross' shot off the crossbar at 19:46. Huber's tally off a Smith feed at 35:10 gave the Yellowjackets a 2-0 lead going into intermission.
Ross converted a penalty kick, and Smith set up scores by Huber and Mae Butler, to cap Rochester's scoring in the second half. The Yellowjackets owned a 20-4 edge in shots and a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Rachael Ross started in goal and split time with Alex Walters for NYU. Each goalkeeper made three saves while playing one half apiece. Meanwhile, Erica Jones led the Violets with two shots.
Celeste Hornbach did not make a save in 79:22 of action before yielding to Bridget Lang, who stopped one shot over the final 10:38 for Rochester.
NYU returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 7, when it hosts non-conference foe Wiliam Paterson University at Manhattan College's Gaelic Park. Game time is 8 p.m.
