The New York University women's volleyball team split its two matches on the first day of competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin 2 at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan on Saturday.

The Violets defeated the University of Rochester 3-0 in their first match, then fell to Washington University 3-1.

NYU rallied to beat Rochester after overcoming a significant deficit in the first set of the match .

Trailing 20-14, the Violets (20-7, 2-3 UAA) scored eight of the next nine points and 11 of the final 13 en route to a 25-22 victory.

The next two sets were a bit easier as NYU defeated the Yellowjackets (14-12, 0-5 UAA) 25-20 and 25-16.

Kendyl Dunn led the Violets with a match-high 16 kills, while Mina Baban contributed a match-high 29 set assists to go along with her eight digs and three blocks.

Alexis Schwartz, who served five of the Violets' winning points during their match-turning set-one streak, recorded a team-high 11 digs, while Natalie Fernandez added 10 digs and seven kills.

Alma Guevara led Rochester with seven kills, Rachel Bender had 21 set assists and Casey Larsen had a match-high 13 digs.

"We came out flat, probably looking ahead to our next match (vs. #4-ranked Washington University), said  NYU head coach Ed Caesar. "But, we hung tough and finally got going."

They certainly did do that against the Bears, pulling off a 25-21 victory in the second set after dropping the first set 25-15.

However, the Violets could not overcome a 5-0 Washington (20-3, 5-0 UAA) streak in the middle of set three and went on to drop the final two sets (25-17, 25-19).

Dunn again led the team with 15 kills, while Elizabeth Dick also totaled double-digits kills (10) and digs (14)..

Baban equaled her first-match numbers with 29 set assists and Schwartz again led the team in digs (18).

Erin Albers led Washington with 15 kills, while Marilee Fisher had a match-high 37 assists.  Kelly Pang and Lauren Budde totaled 26 and 25 digs, respectively.
