Women's Volleyball Survives Host Ithaca to Finish Third

Lead by All-Tournament Team members, sophomore Erin Noonan and freshman Mina Baban, the New York University women's volleyball team pulled out a hard-fought five-set victory over host Ithaca College in the third-place match on Saturday, September 6, in Ithaca, NY.

The Violets (6-2) defeated the Bombers (5-3) 24-26, 27-25, 25-13, 22-25, 17-15 in a 2-hour 10-minute match to finish the tournament 3-1.

Leading a resurgent NYU offense were freshman Elizabeth Dick and Noonan, who both put down a match-high 16 kills, while Dick added 13 digs for her first collegiate double-double. Sophomore Kasey Estes also recorded double-digit kills, putting down 14 while hitting a team-best .275.

On the defensive side, the Violets put up their strongest performance of the season with five players recording double-digit digs. Leading the group were freshman Britney Messier, who put up a career-best 28 digs, and sophomore Rachel Sawyer, who added 26.

Baban put up the best match thus far of her young career, compiling a season-best 57 assists while adding 10 digs.

Leading the way for the Bombers were junior Jen Heberton, who put down a team-best 15 kills, and  sophomore Tina Orlandini, who recorded a match-high 40 digs.

In the Violets' first match of the day, the team fell in five to Union College 20-25, 25-15, 26-24, 23-25, 15-11.

Noonan and Estes led the way on offense, putting down 13 kills each, while Messier recorded a team-high 17 digs.

The Violets return to action next weekend when they travel to Rochester, NY, to take part in the RIT Invitational.  NYU will face SUNY Geneseo at 4:00 pm and St. John Fisher College at 8:00 pm.
