Behind freshman
Kolby Warren's first double-digit kill performance of her career, the New York University women's volleyball team swept SUNY Geneseo on Friday, September 5, to advance to the Championship Bracket of the 2008 Ithaca College Bomber Invitational in Ithaca, NY.
The Violets (5-1) easily handled the Knights (0-2) in an hour and two minutes, defeating them 25-16, 25-21, 25-13.
On offense, Warren put down 12 kills while hitting .688 along with two blocks. Junior
Jess Storer added six blocks and two service aces.
Freshman
Mina Baban led a strong offense, putting up 24 assists while adding six kills and nine digs.
On defense, sophomore
Rachel Sawyer led the way with 10 digs and a team-best four service aces. Freshman
Britney Messier added nine digs and three service aces.
For the Knights, sophomore Krista Frieling and freshman Kat Strickland had four kills each while junior Jess McKenna led all players with 12 digs.
In the team's first match of the day, NYU defeated Baptist Bible College 3-1 (25-18, 25-20, 22-25, 25-14).
Leading the way on offense in the match for the Violets were Storer, Warren and sophomore
Kasey Estes who all put down seven kills.
Along the defensive line, Messier put up a team-high 13 digs while Storer added 10 for her second double-double of the season.
The Violets return to action at 11:30am tomorrow when they take on Union College, the winner of Pool B. The Dutchwomen (6-0) defeated Rochester Institute of Technology and St. John Fisher College to reach the championship bracket.
