NYU Labor Day Invitational Standings & Results

Junior Jess Storer recorded a double-double and sophomore Rachel Sawyer put up 20 digs as the New York University women's volleyball team pulled out a tough 3-1 victory over The Sage Colleges in its second match of the NYU Labor Day Invitational, Saturday, August 30, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The Violets (2-0) defeated the Gators (0-2)  25-7, 25-18, 18-25, 25-16 to remain undefeated and atop the standings at the Invitational.

Leading the NYU offense was sophomore Erin Noonan, who recorded a match-high 14 kills while hitting .400.  Freshman Elizabeth Dick put down 11 kills, while Storer added 13 kills along with 14 digs for her first double-double in an NYU uniform.

On defense, junior Michaela Hammond put up 12 digs and freshman Mina Baban dug up 13 balls to go along with her match-high 41 assists, complimenting Sawyer and Storer's defensive performances.

For the Gators, junior Krista Provost led the way on both offense and defense, putting up team highs in both kills (9) and digs (20).

In the Violets' first match of the day, the team was bolstered by 18 services aces as NYU rolled to an easy 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-9) victory over the Polytechnic Institute of NYU.

Freshman Kolby Warren led all attackers with seven kills while hitting .667. Dick, Noonan and Storer each recorded four kills.

Along the back line, Sawyer put up a team-high six digs while tying a career-high with five service aces.

Baban got her career off to a strong start by putting up 15 assists in the first two games, while freshman Jillian Tremmel added six in game three.

For the Fighting Blue Jays, sophomore Meredith Shipman led the way on offense with five kills and  freshman Victoria Kalvert led all players with seven digs.

The Violets return to the court tomorrow for the second day of the NYU Labor Day Invitational.  NYU will take on undefeated Whitworth University at 12:30 pm, followed by a match with Rutgers University-Newark at 3:00 pm.
