The New York University women's volleyball team will make its 2008 debut at home on Saturday, August 30, when it hosts its annual NYU Labor Day Invitational.
Led by seventh-year head coach
Ed Caesar and bolstered by the return of 10 players from a team that made it to the semifinals of the ECAC South Tournament, the Violets (19-19, 5-6 University Athletic Association in 2007) will open the season against the Polytechnic Institute of NYU at 10:00 am, followed by a match against The Sage Colleges at 3:00 pm. On Sunday, NYU takes on Whitworth University at 12:30 pm and closes the weekend by renewing a long-time rivalry with Rutgers University-Newark at 3:00 pm.
Senior
Stacy Goto, an Honorable Mention All-UAA selection in 2007 will lead the Violets along the back line as the team captain in 2008. Also returning on the back line are junior
Michaela Hammond, and sophomores
Rachel Sawyer,
Annie Baer and
Anna Koehler.
Along the net, the Violets will be led by 2007
American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) New York Region Rookie of the Year
Erin Noonan. Also competing for time along the front line will be junior
Jourdan Ellis, and sophomores
Kasey Estes,
Julia Rickert and
Bethany Burr.
Leading a group of nine newcomers (eight incoming freshman and one transfer) will be freshman
Mina Baban, the Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year, who will take over the setting duties.
