Although the game ended in a 1-1 tie, the second-seeded New York University women's soccer team advanced to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Metro Tournament Championship Game by winning a shootout, 5-4, over #3 Montclair State University on Saturday morning at New Jersey Institute of Technology's Lubetkin Field in Newark, NJ.
NYU (11-8-1) will face top-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology in the title game Sunday at 11 a.m. at Stevens' DeBaun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, NJ. Montclair State ended its season with an 11-10-2 record.
NYU sophomore
Filiz Kipcakli scored the game-winning shootout goal, but the goal does not count as the game goes down as a tie -- and all stats accumulated in the shootout do not officially count.
"It's another great step forward for our program. It was a great effort throughout the game and a great effort in the PK's (penalty kicks)," NYU head coach Werner T. Dasbach said. "It's very exciting because we're in a position to be champions."
Both teams battled back and forth, trading opportunities until sophomore
Laura Palumbo won a ball on the left flank, moved toward the midfield around the 18, then slid a pass across to sophomore
Rebecca Assing, who one-timed it off her right foot into the top left corner of the twine at 72:56.
From there, the Violets withstood three corner kicks by the Red Hawks within a 38-second span. One sequence proved especially dangerous until sophomore
Katie Gaston cleared a close shot by Katie Minervini off the endline.
However, Rachel Senyszyn buried a rebound of a shot by Tina Della Fave at 83:28, forging a 1-1 tie and setting the stage for the shootout.
Overall, Montclair State outshot NYU 13-10, while NYU owned a 12-8 edge on corner kicks.
Sophomore
Alex Walters made four saves for NYU, while Gaston cleared two balls off the endline.
For Montclair State, Leah Tepperman put aside six shots and Della Fave added a team save.
