The New York University women's volleyball team swept SUNY New Paltz in its final match of the weekend to finish second at the NYU Violet Classic on Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The Violets (17-7) finished the tournament second behind the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater which went a perfect 4-4 on the weekend.

In the first set of the match against the Hawks (17-5), the Violets took a commanding 10-2 lead behind three service aces from sophomore Rachel Sawyer.  The two teams traded points after that point, however, NYU would not let up their lead and sophomore Erin Noonan finished it off with a kill at 25-17.

In the second set, the two teams remained close early on.  After the Hawks tied the score at 11-11, the Violets went on a run to open up a four-point lead at 15-11.  New Paltz whittled the lead to one, but could not tie it up as Violet freshman Kolby Warren's kill sealed the set 25-23.

In the third, NYU again took a lead early, going up by four at 10-6.  NYU continued to hold a lead, building it at one point to 17-11, before New Paltz went on a run to tie the set at 20-20.  The two teams split the next eight points before a Hawks error and a kill by Noonan clinched it 26-24.

All-Tournament Team members Noonan and freshman Elizabeth Dick led the way on offense for the Violets.  Noonan put down a match-high 17 kills while hitting .414. Dick added 10 kills and nine digs.

Also strong was freshman Kolby Warren, who put down 10 kills while hitting .474.

Freshman Britney Messier recorded her fourth double-digit dig match of the weekend, putting up 14.

For the Hawks, Brittany Coyle put down nine kills while Nicole Mercandante put up 14 digs.

The Violets return to action next weekend when they travel to Waltham, MA, to participate in University Athletic Association Round Robin #2 hosted by Brandeis University.  NYU will take on the University of Rochester and Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday, Oct. 18, and will face Case Western Reserve University and Washington University on Sunday.
