Four New York University student-athletes have received weekly awards for their performances during the previous week of competition, January 17-23.
Jenny Walker (Sausalito, CA/Redwood) of Women's Basketball,
Tyler Crew (St. Marys, GA/Camden County) of Wrestling and
Issara Schmidt (Winona, MN/Winona Senior) of Women's Diving garnered University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week honors.
James Haag (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) of Men's Volleyball was named the United Volleyball Conference's (UVC) Player of the Week while Walker also received Women's Division II/III Player of the Week kudos from the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) and a spot on the D3hoops.com Team of the Week.
Walker led the
#4-ranked Women's Basketball Team to a pair of UAA road wins, preserving the Violets' perfect record (14-0, 5-0). First, she posted a career-high 26 points with 11 rebounds and three blocks at Washington University in St. Louis. Two days later, the junior captain went for 14 points and 12 rebounds in a comeback win at the University of Chicago.
Haag recorded a team-high 12 kills (.526), seven digs, three aces and a block as the
#5-ranked Men's Volleyball Team opened its 2022 season with a 3-1 win over then-#1-ranked and defending national champion Carthage College.
Schmidt won both the one-meter (315.08) and three-meter (301.80) dives in the
#6-ranked Women's Swimming & Diving Team's tri-meet with #9 MIT and #10 Williams College.
Crew went 3-0 at 125 as the
#13-ranked Wrestling Team defeated #9 RIT, #26 Ithaca College and Penn State-Behrend at the John Reese Duals. He knocked off the #11 nationally ranked wrestler at 125, Matthew Griffin of Ithaca, 6-0.
This is Walker's second UAA Athlete of the Week award of the season and Schmidt's third. Haag is the UVC's first Player of the Week honoree of the 2022 campaign.
