John Messinger of the New York University wrestling team was named University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, January 21.
The freshman went 4-0 at the College of Mount Saint Vincent Invitational on Saturday, January 18, winning the 165-pound championship. Messinger was one of four NYU grapplers to earn championships on the day, as
Matt DiGiovanni placed first at 157 pounds while
Brandon Jones and
Richy Cruz were co-champions at 141 pounds.
This is the first weekly UAA honor for Messinger, who made his debut in the national polls last week when he received Honorable Mention accolades from
d3wrestle.com.
Messinger, along with the rest of the NYU wrestling team, will be back on the mats on Saturday, January 25, as they travel to Hunter College for three dual matches. The squad will face-off against Centennial Conference rivals Johns Hopkins University and Washington and Lee University. Action is set to get underway at 11:30 am.
