The New York University men's tennis team concluded its 2012-13 season with a 6-3 loss to the University of Chicago in the fifth-place match of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Sunday, April 28, in Altamonte Spring, FL.
NYU, the #7 seed in the eight-team tournament, advanced to the final round in the consolation bracket by earning a 6-3 victory over Brandeis University on Saturday. The Maroons, the #5 seed in the tournament, came into the match ranked #29 in the nation in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III national rankings.
After getting swept in the three doubles matches, the Violets responded by splitting the singles matches with the Maroons (14-5). NYU was led by
Aaron Meltzer,
Sidd Thangirala and
James Dean, who all earned victories in singles play.
Thangirala was particularly impressive, as he went 3-0 in singles play over the duration of the UAA Championship.
The Violets were without
CJ Leong, who missed the match due to illness. He was replaced by
Tim Wu in singles play and
Ting Yee Lai in doubles.
“We obviously would have liked to have won, but we came out a little flat after a big win yesterday," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "We got off to a slow start in doubles before a split in singles, but it's hard to come back from 3-0 down."
The Violets, who finished seventh in last year's UAA Championship, improved by finishing sixth this season. NYU wraps up the year with an 8-6 record.
"Overall, I'm very happy with how season went," said Choy. "Most of our core group will be back next season, so there's a lot to look forward to."
