Wrestling Team Bests U.S. Merchant Marine Academy 22-16

NYU Travels to King's Point, NY, and Comes Away With a Win

Dan Gorman beat the defending Centennial Conference champion and helped lead NYU to victory.
The New York University wrestling team beat its Centennial Conference foe, the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), 22-16, in King's Point, NY, on Wednesday, January 18.

NYU jumped out of the gates fast, winning the first four bouts. The Marine Academy forfeited the 125-pound match. Adlee Fayyaz won the 133-pound match. Then, Matt DiGiovanni (141) and Dan Gorman (149) each picked up hard-earned win in their respective bouts.

DiGiovanni, settling in very nicely at his new 141-pound weight class after beginning the season at 149, now boasts a 13-4 record in the weight (19-10 overall).

Gorman, in Wednesday night's bout, defeated the defending Centennial Conference Champion, Martin Bell, in the 149-pound match-up.

“Both Matt and Dan have a lot to be proud of the way they wrestled tonight,” assistant coach Corey Luce explained. “Matt is on a roll at 141 and Dan beating the defending conference champion was probably the difference in tonight's match.”

After a loss in the 157-pound bout, NYU rebounded with back-to-back wins in the 165- and 174-pound match-ups. David Rice (165) continued his impressive season, moving his overall record to 19-1, while  Pat Sheehan stepped in for Gregg Martino at the 174-pound weight class and produced his 16th win of the season.

While USMMA was able to win the last two matches of the dual, NYU prevailed 22-16, improving its record to 5-5 on the season and 2-1 in conference matches.

“Tonight was a nice victory for the guys, and we have a lot to be happy with,” Luce said. “We need to continue to build upon this performance and keep improving each day in practice and in competition.”

Now back to .500 on the season, NYU's grapplers will compete at the New York State Championships this Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 21-22, in Ithaca, NY. The meet is being hosted by Cornell University and will feature both NCAA Division I and Division III programs.
