Maeve Evans finished first in the 6K and the #23 New York University women's cross country team took fifth overall at the Dickinson Long/Short Invitational in Carlisle, PA, on Saturday, September 18.

Evans crossed the finish line in a career-best 22:37 to finish first in the 6K.  Paige Zelinsky also landed in the top 10, finishing eighth with a time of 23:33.

The Violets' three other scorers in the event were all newcomers.  Emily Cousens (24:36) and Lorraine Brancale (24:42) finished just seconds apart to take 27th and 30th, respectively.  Audrey Vera, a transfer in her first race as a Violet, crossed the finish line next for NYU with a time of 25:39.

"Maeve ran a great race and Paige ran really well, too," said head coach Nick McDonough.  "And the freshmen (Emily Cousens and Lorraine Brancale) ran solid races in their first collegiate 6Ks."

The quintet combined to give the Violets a team score of 35 in the 6K, the third lowest at the meet.  NYU added a 133 in the “short” 4K to finish fifth overall out of the 18 schools competing, behind three Division II schools and host Dickinson College, ranked #16 in Division III by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Hannah Satzke led the Violets in the 4K, finishing 24th with a career-best time of 15:38.  Gabriella Gjonaj ran in 16:13 in her second race at NYU, and Laura Santoski ran in 16:47, improving on her time in the same event in the season opener two weeks ago by nearly a minute and a half.

A pair of newcomers, Katherine Calder (17:02) and Lena Pyatkovsky (17:06), rounded out the Violets' scorers.

"We are still getting into shape and still getting where we want to be," commented McDonough.  "We are going to keep working hard to get there."

NYU returns to action on Friday, Sept. 24, at the Stevens Invitational in Jersey City, NJ.  The race is scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm.
