Andrew Zitek continued his fantastic start to the season by taking first place in the 8.1K "Long" race and leading the #6 New York University men's cross country team to the best score in the event at the Dickinson Long/Short Invitational in Carlisle, PA, on Saturday, September 18.

Zitek crossed the finish line first in the 8.1K race with a career-best time of 25:47 – shaving 40 seconds off his previous best time.

Two other Violets posted top-10 finishes in the event.  Sebastian Schwelm took fifth with a time of 26:23, while Kevin Bonilla finished eighth after running in 26:40, just six seconds behind his career-best time.

David Knowles and Ross Wistar were NYU's other scorers in the race, with Knowles running a career-best 27:30 (eight seconds faster than his previous low) to finish in 25th and Wistar crossing the finish line in 49th with a time of 28:01.

The quintet combined to give the Violets a score of 14, the lowest among the 17 schools competing in the "Long" race.  Combined with NYU's score of 62 in the “Short” 4K, the squad finished fourth overall, behind two nationally ranked Division II schools and host Dickinson College, also a nationally ranked Division III team.

"This was the first race of the championship distances, and it was a good effort for where we are this early in the season," said head coach Nick McDonough.  "We ran really nicely in the longer race, which was where most of our effort was focused."

Matt Turlip was the Violets' top runner in the 4K, finishing 15th with a time of 12:31.  Ryan Boyd was NYU's other top-20 finisher, taking 19th after running in 12:39.

Kyle DeLeon (12:50), Ryan Gilmore (13:05) and Josh Shaffer (13:12) also placed for the Violets, helping the squad post the fourth-best team score in the 4K.

"The 4K race didn't go as well as we would've liked, but we are close to where we want to be," noted McDonough.  "We just need to keep working hard to improve."

NYU returns to action on Friday, Sept. 24, at the Stevens Invitational in Jersey City, NJ.  The race is scheduled to begin at 4:30 pm.
