Women's Golf Wins Seventh Liberty League Title

Violets improve by nine strokes in round two to claim first

New York University is the Liberty League women's golf champion for the seventh time ever after completing a second-round comeback on Sunday at the par-72, 5,688-yard Edison Club Gold course in Rexford, NY.

The Violets have won the last six Liberty League Championships they've participated in (the team did not compete in 2020-21) and have secured the League's automatic bid to the 2023 NCAA Women's Golf Championship.

"I'm so proud of the team. They rose to the challenge today," said head coach Katie Rudolph. "To play well under pressure was extremely impressive. Hats off to Tiya for leading the way with an impressive 69. And a huge congrats to Camilla on sealing the deal for us on the very last hole."

Tiya Chowdary dominated day two with a tournament-low 69, which tied the program's lowest-ever single-round score. She climbed nine spots and won the individual title with 147 strokes.

NYU trailed Wellesley College by six strokes entering the second round, improving by nine today with a 301 while Wellesley carded a 308 to give the Violets a thrilling, one-stroke victory (611-612).

"It was a great match coming down the stretch and Wellesley didn't back down," Rudolph added.

Nalinda Wanikpun, the lone returner from last year's Liberty League-winning quintet, shot a 76 in round two while Stephanie Su recorded a 77 as both Violets finished with a total score of 154 to tie for sixth individually.

Chung, the hero for NYU on the final hole, posted a two-day total of 156 which was good for 11th. Irene Park, the Violets' fifth competitor, placed 14th (159) out of 29 golfers.

Chowdary headlined the All-Liberty League First Team, Wanikpun and Su played their way onto the Second Team and Chung secured Third Team honors.

NYU now turns its attention to the 2023 NCAA Division III Championship, which will be held from May 9-12 at the Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, FL.
