NYU Table Tennis has confirmed it's status as a Table Tennis Dynasty in collegiate competition, winning the 2023 NCTTA College National Championship. The win gives the club their second consecutive championship, and it's third in the last five seasons.
The Violets defeated Texas Wesleyan in the Coed Championship Finals, 3-2 in Round Rock, Texas. After the top-seeded Texas Wesleyan bounced back after NYU jumped out in front in the first two frames, the championship was decided in a fifth "Doubles Decider" frame. It was then that the dynamic duo of Jeremy Hazin and Mudit Dani defeated the Wesleyan pair of Tomoike and Deng, keeping the National College championship in New York City.
Hazin and Dani also won the 2023 Men's Doubles Championship earlier in the evening, after finishing in second place in 2022.
Ranked #3 headed into the National Championships, the defending champions were still regarded as favorites, but not as a severe threat to repeat due to the talented teams ahead of them in Runner-Up (#1) Texas Wesleyan and #2 UCLA.
Club Co-President, Runzi Xu, shared thoughts on the triumphant season:
"This year was indeed very tough for us! We fought until the last match to win 3-2 against three teams in order to defend our championship title. Our match with UCLA was especially challenging [in the semi-finals]. We were down 0-2, but our third and fourth players, Mudit Dani and Calvin Chan, handled the immense pressure with style, tying us back to 2-2. And finally, our unbeatable doubles duo of Jeremy Hazin and Mudit Dani sealed the championship for NYU. Everyone in our team contributed towards our victory. We all helped each other warm up, cheered each other on, and strategized together how to organize our line-up. NYU Table Tennis is like a family, and I am so proud to be a part of it. I treasure everyone's persistence and support. Again, congratulations NYU, we are the champions again! Twice in a row! I'm so proud of everyone!"
Enormous credit goes to the club's head Coach, YanJun Gao, who continues to train and produce national players within the club. Gao now carries three College National championships as a coach to go along with a National Championship as a player.
