A four-stroke deficit heading into Sunday's final round was no problem for the New York University women's golf team. Trailing Williams College (303) and Amherst College (304) after shooting 307 on Saturday, the Violets roared back and totaled 296 on Sunday to pass both of those top-10 teams and capture the Jack Leaman Invitational.
The competition was held on Saturday and Sunday, April 23-24, at the Par 72, 5,613-yard Crumpin-Fox Golf Club in Bernardston, MA, and hosted by Amherst.
NYU's final round was eight strokes better than sixth-ranked Williams' 304 and ninth-ranked Amherst's 309 as the Violets, now
ranked 12th by the Women's Golf Coaches Association, went on to win the 10-team event.
"This was an outstanding final round for the women," said Head Coach
Katie Rudolph. "It was a solid team effort with everyone contributing to this win over two days."
Contributing most was
Nalinda Wanikpun who won the individual title by shooting +3 over the two rounds. She shot 147 and tied with Williams' Catalin Yturralde, but won on a scorecard playoff. Per tournament rules, the tiebreaker was a scorecard playoff beginning with the lowest handicap hole. Both golfers tied on the eighth hole and Wanikpun was one stroke better on the 16th hole.
"Nalinda continues to put up numbers for us," Rudolph expressed. "I'm proud she was able to come away with a 'W' as her game continues to improve every time she tees it up."
Wakinpun had great support from her teammates, as
Aliea Clark tied for fourth (150) while both
Summer Yang (seventh place, 153) and
Michelle Zhou (t-eighth place, 154) also posted top-10 finishes.
Madison Phung finished just outside the top-10 with an 11th-place showing (156) in the 59-person event.
The squad will have no time to rest on its laurels as NYU competes at the Liberty League Championship next weekend in Verona, NY.
