Men's Cross Country Wins NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship

NYU Automatically Qualifies for Seventh Straight National Championship Appearance

The New York University men's cross country team contnued its impressive season with a victory in the 44-team NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship, which was held in Genesee Valley Park in Rochester, NY, on Saturday, November 10.

The Violets totaled 50 points and had three runners finish in the top five, with Dylan Karten placing second overall in the 297-person race. 

The victory automatically qualifies NYU for the NCAA National Championship race next Saturday, November 17, in Terre Haute, IN.

Highlights:

- Karten finished with a time of 25:16.2 over the 8,000-meter course, less than two seconds behind winner Alex Brimstein of SUNY Geneseo (25:14.4).

- NYU's other top-five finishers were Kevin Bonilla (4th place, 25:28.4) and Sebastian Oja (5th place, 25:31.0).  

- The Violets' Dave Knowles took 11th place overall (25:48.8), while Kyle De Leon was NYU's fifth scorer (28th place, 26:12.3).

- NYU last won the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship in 2007, the same year the Violets won the NCAA National Championship. NYU also captured the title in 2006.

- All five of NYU's scorers receive NCAA All-Region honors.

- Geneseo placed second with 59 points, while SUNY Cortland was third with 94 points. The host school, NYU's University Athletic Association rival, the University of Rochester, finished fourth with 131 points.

"Our guys ran a really great race today. They did what they needed to do and moved up throughout," said NYU Head Coach Nick McDonough. "I'm proud of the way they performed and stayed focused despite all the distractions of the last two weeks in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy."
