Metropolitan Championship Results
The New York University women's track & field team finished in 13th place at the NY Metropolitan Championships, which were held at the New Balance Track & Field Center in Manhattan on Friday, January 27.
The Violets finished with 12 team points, finishing just ahead of Fairleigh Dickinson University (10 points)..
Columbia University won the team title with 156 points.
NYU was on of only two Division III squads in the 14-team competition.
The Violets' top individual performer was freshman
Alyssa Binczyk, who placed sixth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:18.24. She also combined with
Maeve Evans,
Izzi Corso and
Laura Santoski for a fifth-place finish in the distance medley relay (12:35.18).
Corso also ran well in the 800 meters, winning her heat in a time of 2:22.70.
"Alyssa ran really well for us, especially considering the stiff competition," said NYU head coach Nick McDonough.
Evans was running her first race of the season as she recovers from injury.
"It was nice to see Maeve back out there. It's always tough when you go down with an injury, but she came back and made an impact right away," McDonough.added.
Paige Zelinsky opened her season in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:19.63, taking seventh place.
The Violets also saw some pretty good performances out of their non-runners, including
Vanessa Ortiz who had a top-10 finish in the shot put (10.97 meters).
"I saw some good stuff today from some people and then there are others who are still working themselves into shape, trying to get into race form," McDonough explained. "We are getting closer each day and this will set up well going into the second half of the season."
The Violets return to action next weekend with several team members competing on Friday, February 3, at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the New Balance Track and Field Center, while others will be at Haverford College on Saturday, Feb. 4.
