A quartet of former student-athletes were celebrated at the 2009 NYU Athletics Hall of Fame Induction and Varsity Athlete Reunion on May 9, at the Kimmel Center's Rosenthal Pavilion: Tyras Bookman (Wrestling, '00), Jehan Clark (Basketball, '99), Donald Novick (Baseball, '67), and Cheryl Toussaint (Track & Field, '74).
In addition, the 1969 baseball team that finished third at the Division I College World Series was also honored.
Tyras Bookman was a two-time All-American wrestler who placed seventh in his weight class at the 1999 and 2000 NCAA Division III Championships. He also captured Metropolitan Conference and University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, served as a team captain, and earned National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-America honors in both 1999 and 2000. Bookman resides in San Francisco and is an investment analyst for Park West Asset Management.
Jehan Clark helped lead NYU to the 1997 NCAA Division III National Championship and graduated sixth all-time in Division III with a school-record 449 steals, including a single-season mark of 182 swipes. Selected as a Kodak First Team All-American and the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Metro Player of the Year in 1999, she scored 1,037 points in her four years as a Violet and was a three-time All-UAA honoree. During Clark's career, NYU also reached the Final Four (1996), an Elite Eight (1998) and a Sweet 16 (1999). She resides in Harlem and works for the Yorkville Youth Association, where she coaches youth basketball. Clark is also in her second year of pursuing a Master's in sports management at Columbia University.
Donald Novick played for the U.S. Olympic Team in 1964 after leading the NCAA with a .523 average, amassing 34 hits in 65 at-bats without a single strikeout. At the time, it was the seventh-highest batting average in history. The recipient of the “William McCarthy Award” and the first NYU baseball player ever to win the “Alumni Award” as the University's Outstanding Athlete, Novick captained the Violets' 1965 Metropolitan Conference Championship team before going on to play in the New York Yankees' and Philadelphia Phillies minor league systems (1965-66). Eventually, he came back to coach the Violets' men's soccer team. A retired executive in the home textile industry, Novick is currently the batting coach of the Mamaroneck High School baseball team, which won the 2008 New York State Class AA Championship and was ranked #10 in the Easton National High School Poll.
Cheryl Toussaint did not compete as a varsity athlete for the Violets since NYU did not sponsor women's track & field at the time, but she represented the University at the 1970 World University Games and medaled in the 800 meters and the 4x400-meter relay. She went onto to help the U.S. earn a silver medal in the 4x400 relay at the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics. Toussaint was also a four-time Millrose Games champion from 1970-73, a three-time USA National AAU indoor champion and a two-time USA National AAU outdoor champion. A 2005 Millrose Games Hall of Fame inductee, she founded Tousse Running Apparel, a company that specializes in performance running apparel. Toussaint resides in Teaneck, NJ.
