On Friday, February 17, NYU's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted its fifth annual Pink Zone event at the Jerome S. Coles Sports and Recreation Center to raise money and awareness for the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation.
This year's event was the most successful yet, as the more than 1,000 students and fans in attendance donated a record $2,615.05 to benefit Miles of Hope, which provides funding to non-profit organizations for support services and outreach for people affected by breast cancer in the Hudson Valley.
As the large crowd assembled in support of the fight against breast cancer, the men's and women's basketball players showed their support by wearing specially-designed Pink Zone t-shirts and bright pink socks and shoelaces.
The effort to raise money was also turned into a competition by SAAC, with each NYU varsity program competing to raise the most money. The volleyball teams came out on top of the inter-team competition by raising the most money on a per-athlete basis.
In addition to receiving a t-shirt for their donations, fans at the games were treated to a dinner of Qdoba and Pepsi beverages. The Pink Zone shirts, food and beverages were all sponsored by Pepsi.
“We are proud to have such a generous and socially-aware community at NYU,” said Assistant Athletic Director Peter Krasny. “The event was a great success. We would again like to thank all of those who donated and participated.”
The final Tear It Up! of the year will be on Wednesday, March 21, for the men's volleyball team's conference matchup against local rival Stevens Institute of Technology. The event will begin at 6:45 pm.
