NYU Women's Fencers Eyeing NCAA Regionals

Foil Team Leads Violets

Verzino has been a strong performer for the sabre team

Several members of the New York University women's fencing team will return to the strip at the NCAA Regionals on Sunday, March 14, at Brown University in Providence, RI.

The Violets are 10-15 in dual meets this season. In its last team outing, NYU picked up wins over Vassar College 15-12 and Sacred Heart 14-13 before Columbia University showed its might with a 21-6 victory at a quad meet hosted by Columbia on Feb. 3.

For the Violets, foil has been the weapon of choice this season. Junior Sophie Ciaravino (25-16, 2009 NCAA National qualifier), senior Zoe Evans (37-19) and junior Amanda Rysling (51-18) have led the charge. Rysling has been especially impressive, being named University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week four times this season.

A pair of sabreists have put up noteworthy performances, as well. Senior Alyxandra Mattison (39-3, 2009 NCAA National qualifier) is second on the team in wins, while sophomore Lisa Verzino (35-34) has also been a strong contributor.

The women's epee team will send senior Eliza Friar, junior Victoria Sheng and freshman Christiana Lai to the strip in hopes of making a run at an NCAA Championship berth.

Results from Sunday's NCAA Regionals will be available on goNYUathletics.
